West Ham Could Lose Out To Premier League Rival In Race To Sign The ‘Next Gabriel Martinelli’

West Ham are trailing Newcastle in the battle to secure the services of Malaga winger Antonio Cordero, according to reports.

The Hammers are believed to be one of several Premier League clubs who are interested in signing the teenager.

However, TBRFootball claim that the Magpies are hopeful of “finalising” a deal for Cordero ahead of the summer transfer window.

Along with West Ham, the website reports that the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Brighton and Nottingham Forest have been in contact with the player’s entourage in recent weeks.

What do fans need to know about Cordero?

The 18-year-old has been likened to Gabriel Martinelli. He has a burst of speed, preferring to cut in from the left flank onto his stronger right foot.

After making his debut last season against Atletico Madrid’s B side, Cordero has gradually established himself as a regular starter.

He has particularly caught the eye since Malaga’s promotion to the second tier of Spanish football, having scored 4 goals and provided 6 assists in 24 league appearances this campaign.

West Ham are not exactly short of wingers

Head coach Graham Potter does have the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus, Crysencio Summerville and Luis Guilherme to call upon in wide areas.

However, the Irons are definitely weaker on the left flank, and Cordero could be signed as a potential understudy for Summerville, getting game time in the domestic cups as a way to increase his experience.

By the sound of things, though, it appears that Newcastle have managed to persuade the youngster that a move to St James’ Park is the right one for him. We shall see if his transfer to the North East is confirmed over the coming days and weeks.
