West Ham boss Graham Potter is keen for the Hammers to secure the signature of Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, according to reports.
The Guardian claim that Potter wants to recruit a No.6 and he believes that the England international “fits the bill”.
Gomes is out of contract at the end of the season and the ex-Manchester United player is likely to leave Lille on a free transfer.
Considering that the Irons are limited in what they can do financially due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, the club know how important it is to secure the 24-year-old’s services.
Gomes does have other suitors
His former club Manchester United and Aston Villa are expected to be the two clubs competing with West Ham for the midfielder.
However, with Potter having already identified him as a key cog for his starting lineup, you would think that guarantees of first-team football will give the Irons the edge over their rivals.
Gomes has not been a regular starter for Lille this season, so getting game time will almost certainly be his top priority when deciding on his next team.
The West Ham target has received praise from Keane
Gomes impressed when interim England head coach Lee Carsley selected him to start against Finland during a Nations League fixture back in October.
He played an important role in the build-up to the Three Lions’ opening goal, which Jack Grealish scored, earning praise from pundit Roy Keane:
“Sharp, these couple of touches from Gomes and this last piece, honestly, I think pure quality, lovely and obviously Jack then finishes it off. But really lovely bit of quality.”
Hammers fans will be hoping that he can produce the same level of performance if he makes the move to the London Stadium this summer.
