REPORT: West Ham Linked With Veteran Ex-Newcastle United Goalkeeper

West Ham United have been linked with a move for former Newcastle United, Norwich City and Ajax goalkeeper Tim Krul in the 2024 summer transfer window.

This is according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon [via GIVEMESPORT]. He writes that West Ham view Krul as the ‘perfect backup’ – additionally, given his current situation, he likely won’t be very expensive.

He isn’t the only goalkeeper who the Irons have been linked with in recent weeks. Wes Foderingham, who played for Sheffield United last season, is also thought to be on West Ham’s radar.

How would Tim Krul fit into Julen Lopetegui’s plans at West Ham?

West Ham already have two perfectly capable goalkeepers – Alphonse Areola and Lukasz Fabianski – and at the age of 36, Krul’s best years are well behind him. He played for Luton Town in the Premier League last season, but failed to make a single appearance in the league, being limited to games in domestic cup competitions.

As such, it is unlikely that Krul will be anything other than a backup option for the Hammers if they decide to bring him on board. He may even be their third ‘keeper, given the Irons’ loyalty towards Fabianski. Of course, with a new manager in place, this loyalty may erode over time.

Krul has led an eclectic career in football. He burst onto the scene at Newcastle, where he won their player of the season award at the end of the 2011/12 campaign – ever since then, he has struggled with injuries and lapses of poor form.

On the international stage, Krul picked up 15 caps over the course of ten years for The Netherlands – perhaps his crowning moment in the sport came during the 2014 World Cup, where he helped The Netherlands win a penalty shoot-out against Costa Rica, when he was brought on as a substitute specifically for the shoot-out.
