West Ham technical director Tim Steidten has called on supporters to remain patient following a difficult start to life under new head coach Julen Lopetegui.
Speaking at the STAHLWERK Doppelpass (quotes via Hammers News), Steidten said that Lopetegui required time to integrate his new signings into the squad:
“You definitely need time to find yourself. We have also brought in nine new players, last game there were four in the starting XI. It took a certain amount of time (to integrate them), but of course, you don’t have the time anymore.”
Speaking specifically about Niclas Fullkrug, Steidten said one of the factors that led to the German being signed was his personality:
“It all depends on what kind of characters you have, so this is the reason why we brought in not only a great player in Niclas but he can also solve a lot of things for you on and off the pitch. It’s also not just a question of quality. It’s about how you put the team together as far as personalities are concerned.”
How have West Ham’s summer signings fared?
It’s fair to say that not every purchase that the Irons have made has managed to hit the ground running. Max Kilman and Guido Rodriguez have been given the most minutes but the jury is very much still out on both of them.
Jean-Clair Todibo has been slowly introduced to the starting eleven after initially struggling with his match fitness. Carlos Soler is in the same boat as the Frenchman. Crysencio Summerville has looked bright when given starts by Lopetegui but many feel he needs more game time.
Luis Guilherme has had limited opportunities but he did get his first taste of Premier League football against Ipswich last weekend. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has probably had the most promising start since his arrival from Manchester United.
What is the situation with Fullkrug?
The striker is currently struggling with Achilles tendonitis. It was hoped that he could return to action before the international break, but Lopetegui said last week that he still isn’t 100%.
Fullkrug’s comeback is pencilled in for either the Tottenham or United fixture at the end of October.
