Brentford manager Thomas Frank is destined for “bigger” things than West Ham, according to Ian Wright.

Fellow pundit Shay Given had asked why Frank hasn’t been up for other jobs in the Premier League, suggesting he was overlooked in favour of Julen Lopetegui for the Hammers position in the summer:

“The thing about Thomas Frank is that it’s remarkable with all these jobs going, he never seems to be linked. West Ham for example, the most recent job that has gone in the summer, he wasn’t close to getting it.”

Wright then dismissively replied that the Dane deserves to be considered by clubs of a higher calibre than his former team:

“He’s bigger than West Ham for me at the minute.”

That is a surprising comment from Wright. While he is more widely known for his distinguished spell at Arsenal, it shouldn’t be forgotten that he also played for the Irons for a season.

Wright should know about the level of support that the club has. The average attendance of 62,440 was the second-highest in the Premier League last season.

If the club wanted to hire Frank, they could easily have done so but the club’s hierarchy opted for Lopetegui instead.

The pressure is still on Lopetegui

There is no doubt that West Ham should be performing better than they are at the moment. It hasn’t been a great start for the new manager.

The victory against Ipswich Town has calmed nerves heading into the international break but Lopetegui will need results when club football returns later this month to cool talk of him being sacked.

If things don’t go the Spaniard’s way, though, don’t be surprised if Frank is one of the names in the frame to replace him.
