Kyle Walker-Peters Reveals “Target” Has Been Set As West Ham Aim For Automatic Promotion

West Ham fullback Kyle Walker-Peters says the squad have set themselves a “target” for the number of clean sheets they want to keep this season.

The Hammers got their second shutout against Wrexham during the 6-0 win last Friday, and the three points moved them to the top of the Championship. With Nuno Espirito Santo’s side hoping to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, Walker-Peters said they have given themselves a goal for clean sheets, which they believe will be enough to clinch 1st or 2nd spot:

“It’s huge. It’s something we spoke about actually as a defensive unit. We spoke about how many clean sheets we need to get automatically promoted.”

“So, we have our target, and that’s another one added, so we’re really happy.”

Walker-Peters caught the eye against Wrexham

The 29-year-old was one of the standout performers last week, along with Jarrod Bowen. He provided assists for Taty Castellanos and Manor Solomon, having come on as a substitute for the injured Joel Veltman midway through the first half.

Walker-Peters is very likely to be named in the starting lineup for the Carabao Cup tie against Fulham and the league clash versus Millwall this weekend.

West Ham are heading in the right direction

With so many changes made to the first-team squad over the summer, there was always going to be an initial bedding-in period for new signings.

The 6-0 rout against Wrexham does, though, suggest that Nuno has started to get the most out of the players at his disposal. Of course, there is a long way to go, but fans are now feeling confident that this team will be in contention for the automatic promotion spots by the end of the season in May.
