Ex-Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker has admitted that his former club are now “serious favourites” for relegation, rather than West Ham or Nottingham Forest.

When reviewing the 2-2 draw against Brighton, which saw Spurs concede a late equaliser, Lineker said the North London club have to be considered as the likeliest candidates for the drop:

“It was actually a very good game. There was some great goals scored in that 2-2 draw, some great goals. But I mean, they are serious favourites now to go down. I mean, Spurs in the Championship…”

Lineker is seemingly struggling to contemplate that a club like Tottenham could be relegated, but it is now a genuine possibility.

The Hammers could move clear of Tottenham

Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side are one point ahead of Spurs, with a game in hand, which they will play against Crystal Palace on Monday night.

If they can secure victory at Selhurst Park, it would massively boost their chances of staying up, whilst putting their London rival in an even more precarious position in the bottom three.

What are the odds of West Ham going down?

Statisticians Opta have given the Irons only a 38.47% chance of losing their top-flight status, while Spurs’s odds of finishing in the relegation zone are now more than 50/50 (56.58%).

Nottingham Forest’s 4-1 win over Burnley on Sunday afternoon has reduced their probability to just 4.50%, while back-to-back wins for Leeds mean their chances of going down have been lowered to a tiny percentage (0.43%).

For all intents and purposes, it looks like it will be a straight fight between Tottenham and West Ham to avoid the drop.
