Head Coach Julen Lopetegui “retains full support from the board” despite West Ham losing 4-1 to London rivals Tottenham at the weekend, according to The Athletic‘s Roshane Thomas.
The journalist says there is no chance of the Spaniard being replaced before the Hammers play their next match against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
There was some optimism that West Ham had turned a corner following the 4-1 win over Ipswich Town before the international break, but the heavy defeat to Spurs puts more pressure on Lopetegui.
The biggest concern was how the team capitulated so quickly early in the second half. They conceded 3 goals in 8 minutes.
Kilman questioned the player’s concentration levels
Centre-back Max Kilman pinpointed that 8-minute spell as the key factor in West Ham losing. Speaking to the club’s website following the match, he said:
“It wasn’t good enough. There was a spell in the second half when we let the game slip. It was a bad spell for us. We lost concentration as a team at important moments and let them get ahead of us.”
“Obviously it’s not good enough for the level we are and the quality we have. We need to be doing much better. We need to compete with the best teams in the league and we have the quality to do that. We need to keep going and hopefully, things will change.”
West Ham’s manager is among the favourites to be sacked
Lopetegui has odds as short as 8/1 at some bookmakers to be the next Premier League coach to be fired. Ironically, though, the manager of the Irons’ next opponent is currently ahead of the Spaniard in the ‘sack race’.
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is 11/4 to be axed, while Southampton’s Russell Martin is currently odds-on to leave. Wolves’ Gary O’Neil is also hanging on to his job (4/1).
