West Ham boss Graham Potter looks like a manager with no answers, according to BBC pundit Ashley Williams.
When asked on Match of the Day whether the former Brighton and Chelsea head coach is under pressure after an embarrassing 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham, Williams replied:
“Absolutely, and even when they cut to him during the game, it doesn’t look like he has the answers; he seems a little bit baffled on the sideline.”
Potter does cut a sorry figure in the dugout, and his demeanour is not one of a man who looks confident that he can turn around this terrible start to the campaign.
West Ham’s actions this summer have not helped Potter
The manager needed a full pre-season to implement his ideas, but with most of the club’s activity taking place in the final month of the transfer window, he hasn’t had much time with this group of players.
Plenty of fans will see that as a pretty flimsy excuse, but preparation for this season has been far from ideal, and it has undoubtedly impacted performances on the pitch.
Will the board wield the axe before the Palace game?
It is fair to say that things could not have gone much worse for Potter, but at the moment, there is no indication from sources close to the club that he will be fired this week. He is, though, definitely on borrowed time.
Conceding eight goals in your first two home fixtures against London rivals is simply not acceptable. If he is still in charge for Saturday’s match against Crystal Palace, Potter will be under tremendous pressure to secure all three points. Otherwise, the Irons could be seeking their third new manager in the space of a year.
