West Ham will “open talks” with Manchester United about signing Scott McTominay this week, according to Caught Offside.
The Hammers tried to sign the Scotland international last summer but the player ultimately ended up staying at Old Trafford, playing a bit-part role under manager Erik ten Hag.
McTominay is still said to be “out of favour”, with the Red Devils willing to listen to offers of around €35m (£29m) for the midfielder.
That is a steep price tag, though, and it remains to be seen whether technical director Tim Steidten is willing to match the valuation.
It is believed that initial discussions have already taken place about McTominay but these follow-up talks will determine whether a deal is actually possible.
West Ham could be put off by the player’s wage demands
Caught Offside report that McTominay wants a salary in the region of £10m a year if he leaves United. That would see him earn roughly £192,000 a week, which is over three times what he is currently getting.
Considering that the Irons’ highest earner, Lucas Paqueta, takes home £150,000 a week, it seems very unlikely that the London club would be able to agree personal terms with McTominay unless he is willing to compromise.
McTominay is not the only Man United player that West Ham want
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also on the Hammers’ list of transfer targets, with the club keen on providing some competition for Vladimir Coufal at right-back following the departure of Ben Johnson.
However, Wan-Bissaka is not thought to be the top priority at the moment, with Steidten keen to get a deal over the line for Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters.
Even so, there is still a possibility that both McTominay and Wan-Bissaka could make the switch to the London Stadium this summer.
