REPORT: West Ham ‘Keen On Signing’ Wantaway Liverpool Star But They Face Competition From 3 Other PL Clubs

West Ham are one of four Premier League teams interested in signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, according to HITC Football.

The England international is believed to be unsettled at Anfield, after reportedly being offered to Newcastle as part of a deal that would have saw Anthony Gordon moving in the opposite direction.

The Magpies are still said to be “keen on signing” Gomez, along with the Hammers, Crystal Palace and Brentford.

At the moment, it doesn’t look like one club is favourite to land the 27-year-old, but a move before the transfer window closes at the end of this month is a distinct possibility.

West Ham need reinforcements at the back

The Irons lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace in a pre-season friendly on Saturday night and question marks remain about the quality of centre-halves at the disposal of manager Julen Lopetegui.

While Max Kilman has been recruited from Wolves at great expense, there is a strong feeling that he needs a new partner alongside him in the middle of defence.

Captain Kurt Zouma and teammate Nayef Aguerd are both expected to be sold if suitable offers arrive so that area of the pitch may need to be strengthened ahead of the August 30th deadline.

A centre-back signing is on the agenda

West Ham technical director Tim Steidten has made efforts to secure the services of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo. It is believed that the club even had an offer accepted for the player.

However, Todibo is said to have his heart set on a move to Juventus. With that being the case, other options need to be considered and, in that context, the links to Gomez are not entirely surprising.

It should be pointed out, though, that he didn’t play a lot of football as a centre-half last season, with manager Jurgen Klopp deploying him mostly as a fullback, but he does have plenty of experience playing in that position.
