Juventus have begun talks with AC Milan about signing West Ham target Fikayo Tomori, according to reports in the Italian media.
The Bianconeri are struggling with injuries in their backline and head coach Thiago Motta has identified the former Chelsea defender as his preferred option.
Calciomercato.com claim that “negotiations” have commenced over a loan deal with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.
However, Milan’s stance on a potential move during the January transfer window may give West Ham cause for hope.
The Rossoneri want to send Tomori back to England
While Juve appear to be the team pressing the most to sign the centre-back, Calciomercato report that Milan would “prefer to sell” to a Premier League club as they don’t want to strengthen a direct rival.
West Ham and Brighton are cited as the two English teams likeliest to make an offer for Tomori, although they would have to match the player’s €25m (£21m) asking price. Other reports in recent weeks have also mentioned the likes of Newcastle and Aston Villa as potential suitors.
The centre of defence is a key weakness for West Ham
It’s fair to say that the Irons have struggled at the back this season, with Konstantinos Mavropanos (in particular) failing to impress. Max Kilman has performed to a better standard, while Jean-Clair Todibo has caught the eye on occasion but the Frenchman has not been able to stay fit.
The dearth of quality options means the club do really need to strengthen at centre-back next month. Restrictions due to PSR may make a permanent deal for Tomori difficult to negotiate but, if Milan are open to some sort of loan with a purchase clause, then it may be a move worth pursuing.
