Up until the last decade or so, clubs rarely spent sizeable sums of money on teenagers. One of the reasons for that is that you are taking a massive risk of signing someone who may not turn out to be that good.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s £12m move to Manchester United in 2003 was a record for a teenager at the time, and it was so high profile because it was so rare for clubs to pay that much for unproven talent.
Of course, that deal worked out extremely well for the Red Devils and, since then, it has become increasingly prevalent for clubs to splash out on youngsters.
