What’s gone wrong and what needs to change at West Ham?

West Ham’s season went from bad to worse on Saturday as they were defeated 3-2 at home by champions Leicester City. Three first half goals from the foxes through Mahrez, Huth and Vardy ensured West Ham faced an uphill battle. The Hammers gave everything they had in a second half that they dominated; however, they only got one goal back via Andre Ayew.

It was another game that showcased just how weak West Ham have been at the back this season. It was the 8th Premier League game in a row that they have failed to keep a clean sheet. The Hammers have already conceded 52 goals in the league so far this season, that total is one more than the 51 goals they conceded in the whole league campaign last year. Not even nine shut outs on the bounce would better their defensive record from last season, that’s some stat.

A strong league season is usually built on solid home form, being incredibly difficult to beat and findings a way to earn maximum points in testing circumstances. West Ham haven’t shown any of these qualities so far this season. They’ve suffered some embarrassing defeats at the hands of Manchester City, even the post got man of the match against Hull.

The East-Londoner’s only lost a measly 3 times at home last year, compared to seven times already this time out. Only Swansea have shipped more goals at home than the Irons this season. Letting in 27 goals in 15 games doesn’t give you much of a chance in earning consistent points at home.

But the goals against is only half the story, not one West Ham player has made it to double figures for goals this season. To finish in the European places history tells us at least one player needs to be in double figures in the league, preferably two or more. When looking at West Ham’s squad you have to question the firepower going forward into the next campaign. The owners will be looking at the situation, especially after their much-publicised hunt for a striker last term.

One positive for West Ham since Dimitri Payet’s departure has been the emergence of Manuel Lanzini. The Argentinian seems to be taking on more responsibility since the Frenchman left the club. West Ham fans will be looking for more goals like his cracking first half effort against Leicester last Saturday. His creative play has allowed the Hammers to play with more freedom up the pitch, which will raise hopes for the 2017-18 season. In fact, West Ham have scored in each of their last 6 Premier League games, scoring 11 goals in the process.

Slaven Bilic’s side will be looking to keep the goals flowing for their remaining games. Having spent a year acclimatising to their new surroundings, and with the addition of a few more forward players and solid defenders, they could be the Premier League’s most-improved team next term.
