‘What An Imperious Display’ Premier League Legend Lauds West Ham United Defender’s Performance Against Fulham

Former Newcastle United striker and Premier League legend Alan Shearer has given praise to a West Ham United defender in his team of the week. He waxed lyrical on the performance of Angelo Ogbonna, as he played a huge role in keeping Fulham at bay.

In the game against Fulham at the weekend, Ogbonna was superb – he cleared everything that came near him in a calm, composed fashion. It was exactly the type of performance that you would want from an experienced centre-back – and was exactly the type of performance that West Ham needed against the Cottagers.

On Ogbonna’s performance at the weekend, Shearer said (via the Premier League Official Website): “What an imperious display from the West Ham centre-back as he helped his side claim a big win for David Moyes against Fulham.”

Against the Cottagers, West Ham recorded a crucial 1-0 away at Craven Cottage. It was a largely dull encounter, with the only goal of the game coming by the way of Harrison Reed putting the ball into his own net – but Irons fans will not mind that. At this stage, the only thing that matters is survival.

Defensively, the Hammers were excellent against Fulham. Adopting a no-nonsense low block, Ogbonna and his centre-back partner Kurt Zouma guarded Lukasz Fabianski’s net ferociously. Between them, they notched up 25 clearances over the course of the game.

It was Ogbonna’s first start for the club since they were beaten 4-0 by Brighton in March. With the 34-year-old Italian’s contract set to expire in the summer, would you like him to be offered a new deal?
