West Ham’s season has been a tale of two sides, major improvements needed

West Ham’s spirits were raised significantly last week with a crucial 1-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur, ending the Lilywhites’ faint hopes of winning the Premier League, but Slaven Bilic’s side were brought crashing down to earth yesterday.

Liverpool tore the Hammers apart with a 4-0 victory to end West Ham’s debut season at the London Stadium and heap more misery upon a club who has struggled in unfamiliar surroundings this term, with the exit from the Boelyn Ground playing a huge part in the club’s misfortunes.

West Ham’s season has been a mix of disappointments following a poor Premier League campaign, early exits from the cup competitions and a failure to advance through the qualifying stages of the Europa League, which has left the first season in their new home as one to forget.

However, as shown by the victory against Tottenham last week, there has been positives for the Hammers this season and Bilic’s side now face a challenge to find consistency next season following a campaign that has been a rollercoaster ride.

As well as the victory against Spurs, West Ham secured crucial wins against Swansea City, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Chelsea, beating the latter in the League Cup, which has shown that the Hammers are capable of achieving top-class results.

The difficulty is that the same side has endured heavy defeats to the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City this season, with the performances in those games being incredibly different from the displays put in during the key victories for Slaven Bilic’s side.

The consistency issue will need to be addressed in the summer during a period that could see heavy changes, as key-players have been linked with exits, top-names have been mentioned as potential arrivals and the future of Slaven Bilic remains uncertain.

West Ham have likely fallen short of their minimal objective of finishing in the top-half of the table, as they’d need to beat Burnley away from home and hope that both Leicester City and Bournemouth slip-up, with the Hammers needing a six-goal swing in goal difference if they’re to leapfrog the Cherries.

The club now need to focus on the business they need to do during the summer to ensure this season has been a minor blip, as failure to do so could bring the Hammers’ illustrious project tumbling down- which would be a disaster.

Right now, the decision to leave Upton Park for the Olympic Stadium is a questionable one for many and there is no turning back, so the Hammers need to move quickly to ensure they’re making progress after their move and will seek to close the gap on the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea, all of whom are yet to complete big stadium moves of their own.
