West Ham United shot-stopper Lukasz Fabianski believes his team can avoid relegation this season, according to an interview he conducted with Sky Sports.

While West Ham looked to be in serious danger of relegation a few weeks ago, an upturn in form now sees them sitting 15th – four points above the drop zone. Additionally, spirits seem to be high in the dressing room.

On whether he believes if the Hammers will stay up or not, Fabianski said: “Yeah, for sure. We need to believe, we need to be confident.

“We always knew that it’s going to take more than what we are on at the moment. We’re never actually thinking that we are safe, we know that we need to get more points, but everything is still in our hands.

“We are more or less in control of the situation, so it’s up to us. We don’t have to really look at other teams so I think that’s obviously great; that’s the best place to be in terms of how you want to control the situation and it’s going to be up to us.”

Fabianski, one of the oldest players in the Premier League (just behind Thiago Silva), has been at West Ham since 2018. He has also spent time at clubs such as Arsenal, Swansea City and Lech Poznan.

West Ham have a tough run of games at the end of the season. Not only do they have their Europa Conference League campaign to deal with, they are also set to take on the likes of Manchester City, Brentford and Manchester United in their remaining Premier League games.

They will play out a crucial game with fellow relegation candidates, Leeds United, on May 21. A win could see the Hammers attain survival – but with former Irons boss Sam Allardyce set to take the helm at Elland Road, it won’t be easy.
