West Ham United Defensive Colossus Linked With Premier League Big Hitters

West Ham United’s top defender, Nayef Aguerd, is the subject of interest from Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, according to a report from GOAL.

The link comes as a result of Liverpool appointing a new sporting director – Jorg Schmadtke. The 59-year-old is keen to make a mark early on – as such, he has put together a list of players who he would like to bring to Anfield in the upcoming summer transfer window.

One of the names he has listed is none other than West Ham’s Nayef Aguerd. With Joel Matip and Nat Phillips possibly leaving Liverpool in the summer, the Reds would need a centre-back, with the Moroccan monolith having been identified as a potential replacement.

Should West Ham United keep Nayef Aguerd?

Defensively, West Ham United have not been as airtight as manager David Moyes would like them to be. They have shipped 53 goals in 37 Premier League games this season – with Aguerd playing in the majority of those fixtures.

Despite this, he is still one of the Hammers’ best defenders. Angelo Ogbonna is set to leave the club on a free transfer upon the expiration of his contract – furthermore, Thilo Kehrer has been somewhat underwhelming. Due to this, unless the Irons wish to undertake a major rebuild in the summer, it may be wise to hang on to quality players such as Aguerd.

Nayef Aguerd career summary

Aguerd’s youth career began in the Mohammed VI Academy in his native Morocco. He made his professional debut at FUS Rabat, for whom he went on to make 106 appearances for.

In 2018, he joined Dijon in Ligue 1 – marking his first foray into European football. Aguerd would then go on to sign for Rennes in 2020, where he established himself as one of the best defenders in the league.

This was noticed by West Ham, who snapped him up in 2022 for a fee of £30 million – since then, he has made 28 appearances for the Irons, scoring two goals.
