West Ham striker Michail Antonio says Harry Maguire should have joined the Hammers this summer.
David Moyes’s side had agreed a £30m deal for the Manchester United star but the defender rejected the move. Antonio spoke out on his podcast to say that the player may soon regret the decision, considering the problems that he is facing at Old Trafford:
“Honestly, I would’ve [moved to West Ham]. I would’ve wanted the clean slate for myself. I would’ve wanted to move away, start again and to rebuild myself because people on his back are his own fans. So, for him to build himself again with a clean slate.”
“At West Ham, everyone knows about him, everyone knows what he’s going through. We would’ve tried to build him up and give him that fresh start. Nobody has spoken up for him, I have on this podcast. He should be getting more backing. Someone needs to help.”
Despite being capped 59 times by England, Maguire has received a lot of flak, both from opposition fans, as well as his own, for some poor performances. He is not a regular starter at United and there is a possibility that he could risk his place in the England squad for the European Championships next year.
West Ham have already found a replacement for Maguire
Despite Antonio seemingly leaving the door open to the Manchester United player moving to the London Stadium in the future, the Irons are no longer in need of his services.
After Maguire turned down the club, an approach was made for Stuttgart’s Konstantinos Mavropanos instead. The former Arsenal player secured a £18m switch to West Ham a week before the transfer deadline at the start of this month.
