West Ham set to approve loan deal but they should keep him for this season

West Ham are requiring a major revamp this summer and there has been a wealth of rumours surrounding the club, with Pablo Zabaleta having already arrived at the club and Manchester City’s young ace Kelechi Iheanacho said to be on the way.

Slaven Bilic needs to continue to improve his defensive ranks this summer and a surprising report has emerged in the press today, which indicates that Reece Oxford could be on his way to Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach on a loan deal.

The German aces have fantastically developed Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen during the past two years but the Danish ace is set to return to Stamford Bridge this summer, leaving a huge hole in the squad to be filled.

Oxford could develop tremendously under the guidance of Borussia Monchengladbach but approving a deal for the 18-year-old would be a huge surprise on West Ham’s part, as he could become a crucial player in the Hammers squad.

Two seasons ago Oxford starred on the opening day of the Premier League season against Arsenal but Slaven Bilic has kept him protected since. Whilst that’s understandable, it’s got to the stage where Oxford needs football and West Ham need a boost to their defensive ranks.

If Oxford is good enough to play for Borussia Monchengladbach, then he’s certainly good enough to be a regular for West Ham- and approving an exit, even on a temporary basis, would raise question marks on West Ham’s development of young talent.

Versatile Oxford can also play in midfield but endured a disappointing campaign on-loan at Reading last season, making just five appearances, and now needs his first-team opportunities to be more significant and regular.

Whilst the motives behind the move are good, West Ham, and potentially Oxford, would benefit from keeping the England youngster at the club to fight for a first-team spot and, given the impact he has made previously, he could become a regular.

West Ham’s current crop of central defenders, including James Collins, Winston Reid and Jose Fonte, are all ageing and many have been linked with an exit this summer- and bringing in too many replacements could prove to be disruptive.

In the long-run, West Ham could excel with Angelo Ogbonna and Oxford in the centre of defence- and the Hammers should give Oxford that chance, rather than see him develop elsewhere and possibly attract interest from European giants.
