Sky Journalist Confirms West Ham Are ‘Keeping An Eye” On Ex-Chelsea Boss But He Is Not Their Top Candidate

West Ham are “keeping an eye” on Thomas Tuchel, according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The former Chelsea head coach is set to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season and Plettenberg says he is “ready to return” to England this summer for his next job (with Manchester United having also been linked).

Technical director Tim Steidten is said to be a big admirer of Tuchel, and it appears that the Hammers will seriously consider him as a candidate to replace David Moyes.

However, Plettenberg has emphasised that Tuchel is not currently the favourite to become the next West Ham manager.

Amorim remains the top target

It is believed that, despite reports that he is not interested in making the switch to the London Stadium, Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is still seen by West Ham as the preferred candidate.

The 39-year-old travelled to London last week to hold talks with chairman David Sullivan but it has been subsequently claimed that the Portuguese coach is unlikely to accept an offer from the Irons.

Who else could West Ham target?

In addition to Amorim and Tuchel, Plettenberg has suggested that former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui and current Lille boss Paulo Fonseca remain in the frame.

There have been rumours in Italy that Lopetegui could join AC Milan but the Spaniard is only one of a number of contenders who could replace Stefano Pioli in the dugout at the San Siro.

It has even been suggested that West Ham have offered a contract to Lopetegui worth €5m (£4.3m) a year but that claim has not been substantiated by sources in the UK.

For now, it looks as though the race to become the next Hammers head coach is still open. With Sullivan set to hold talks with Moyes at the end of May, we may know a lot more by then about who could replace the Scot.
