Ex-Arsenal defender Lee Dixon has praised West Ham for securing the signature of James Ward-Prowse.

The £30m summer signing from Southampton got on the scoresheet once again during the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City at the weekend and, speaking on the Two Robbies podcast, Dixon said he is surprised that the England international didn’t go for a higher fee:

“He’s got a brain on him, he’s really intelligent and I think that run you’re talking about to get the goal [against City], you know that’s an intelligent run. He has to see that space, he has to wait his time, he doesn’t go too early otherwise he’s seen.”

“I forget off the top of my head, but you look at the transfer fee and that’s underappreciated as well. They got him for that?”

Ward-Prowse has had an outstanding start to life at West Ham

Since arriving at the London Stadium, Ward-Prowse has been a revelation, scoring 2 goals and providing 3 assists in only 4 appearances.

The 28-year-old did have less than a year left on his contract at Southampton but, even so, the Hammers did fantastic business by getting him in so cheaply.

West Ham used the funds from Declan Rice’s sale wisely

In addition to Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez has started pretty strongly. The Mexican international was brought in from Ajax for £35m and he has impressed in his first 3 starts for David Moyes‘ side. However, he did sustain a knock against City on Saturday and he is a doubt for the first Europa League group game versus Backa Topola.

Mohammed Kudus and Konstantinos Mavropanos have yet to be given starts but many believe they will also end up being great additions to the squad. From the looks of things, the club has invested the money well from Declan Rice’s record sale to Arsenal.
