West Ham did inquire about signing Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti earlier this month, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The Catalan based newspaper claims that the Hammers, along with Arsenal, Everton, Marseille, Rennes and Lyon have all asked about the player. He was then sidelined with a knee injury prior to the game against Villarreal on July 5th.
Umtiti has told Barca officials that he wants to stay at the Camp Nou, but the feeling is that he will depart if the La Liga side bring in another centre-back this summer.
The France World Cup winner is expected to be available on loan with an option to buy, which could make him a realistic target for West Ham, considering their budgetary constraints.
However, Umtiti’s reluctance to leave Barcelona, combined with his chronic knee problems, may well make him a less attractive option for the Irons, especially if his wage demands are high as well.
