West Ham must stick with Pellegrini

Well that was a surprising start to the season. To be fair, we didn’t expect all the new signings to gel at once and we even thought that The Hammers would lose a couple of games at the beginning of the new Premier League season. What we didn’t think would happen was that they would lose ALL of them.

So, after an inauspicious genesis, Manuel Pellegrini’s team are already playing catch-up. With only four games played they have already conceded 10 goals whilst scoring two. They have collected precisely zero points and sit bottom of the Premier League. The good news is that they are only one win off 15th place. The bad news is that they don’t look like winning any time soon.

What has gone wrong? Pellegrini has managed big clubs, small clubs and some in between, which is probably where West Ham would lie. He has taken little Málaga to the Champion’s League, he has won the Premier League with Manchester City and yet he is struggling at West Ham where money has not been an object.

Is it just a case of the players still learning to play with each other? West Ham fans will be hoping that is the case and, in fairness, they have looked quite good in patches during some of their games.

Anyway, there is no point in even thinking about sacking the manager at this stage of the season and hopefully the “three stooges”, who pass themselves off as responsible owners of a football club, will realise this fact.

Pellegrini obviously needs time but his past suggests that he gets it right far more often than he gets it wrong.

Bear in mind, he was only sacked by Real Madrid, despite finishing second to Barcelona with a then record 96 points. because they wanted current Manchester United boss José Mourinho. Florentino Perez said at the time that had Mourinho not been available then he would have kept Pellegrini.

This “always keeping the seat warm for somebody else” continued when he was relieved of his duties at Manchester City purely because Pep Guardiola was available. Again the impression is very strong that, had Guardiola remained in Germany, then Pellegrini would have remained in Manchester.

So he has never been fired for being a failure and West Ham supporters needn’t start thinking that he is about to become one at their club. He will turn things around and, given time, he will get the team into the top half of the table and even into a Europa League spot.

Just remember, West Ham are hardly likely to be able to replace the Chilean with either Mourinho or Guardiola, so as long as he is wanted at the London Ground, then he will stay and the best is yet to come, (well, it could hardly get any worse!)
