West Ham must ensure they win this striker battle as Premier League rivals swoop

West Ham have endured a slow start to the summer transfer window but things certainly seem to be starting to develop in East London, with the Hammers reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Joe Hart from Manchester City and eyeing further recruits.

Slaven Bilic’s transfer strategy this season is vastly different to West Ham’s tactic 12 months ago, where a scattergun approach in the transfer market led to many arrivals at the London Stadium- the majority of which failed to impress and many have already been ousted.

West Ham’s patience in the market so far shows they’ve learned their lesson from last year but the heat is rising now and the Hammers need to be ready to go all-out to land one man in the transfer window, as they risk losing him to a Premier League rival.

The Daily Express states Chelsea are ready to go head-to-head in the transfer market with West Ham for the services of Bayer Leverkusen’s Mexican striker Javier Hernandez, who’d certainly be a significant upgrade on the options the Hammers currently have in attack.

Chelsea are under pressure in the market to land a top-class striker after missing out on Romelu Lukaku, who joined Manchester United, but West Ham will see Hernandez as a very realistic option to bolster their attack- and beating Chelsea to the former Manchester United man will be a massive coup.

29-year-old Hernandez has established a reputation for being a fox in the box striker who can always bring goals to a side, which is exactly what West Ham require ahead of next season, and the fact he could be available for as little as £13m means the Hammers would be crazy not to pass this opportunity by.

Realistically, West Ham would struggle to find a player of Hernandez’ stature for such a small fee and it’s difficult to envisage where the Hammers would turn their attention to if they didn’t capture the Mexican striker, as top-class strikers are at a premium and there isn’t too many on the market.

Beating Chelsea in the transfer market certainly won’t be easy but the Hammers need to try, as Hernandez would be the perfect addition to the side.
