West Ham must be careful and just add the finishing touches this summer

West Ham have had one hell of a ride this season. If making the move away from Upton Park was not bad enough for most Hammers fans, what followed would only complicate things.

The season started out with a Europa League loss to some ‘Romanian farmers’ meaning they were out of the competition before it ever really got going, following that there was all the trouble in the stands, amongst themselves and with opposition fans.

All the trouble with fans and stewards meant that what was going on in front of them, some pretty poor performances, went largely by the wayside as headlines focused on the fans. With the focus away from the football, Slaven Bilic’s side slipped slowly towards a relegation battle.

A few months into the season and things still hadn’t got too much better. However, coming into Christmas and the Croatian looked to have found something that worked.

Fast forward a few weeks and we’re into the January window and, having got their season back on track there was another problem, star man Dimitri Payet decided that enough was enough and he wanted out.

Having sold the Frenchman to Marseille, Bilic rallied his men and they looked to be back on track, highlighted with their impressive win over Southampton. Since then though there has still been no win and Bilic has now been slapped with a treble injury blow of Michail Antonio, Winston Reid and Pedro Obiang.

Whilst it has of course been a tough season for those in east London and the squad certainly needs improving this summer, the powers that be at the London Stadium must get things right this season.

The current squad have, more than once this season, shown the makings of a team which could seriously challenge for those European places next term, meaning that transfer activity the like of last summer’s is far from what’s needed.

It is quite clear that the board led the way with many deals last term, something which was scrapped in January with the canny additions of Jose Fonte and Robert Snodgrass, similar action is needed this summer.

Bilic must look carefully at what he needs ahead of next season, and avoid going all out with another thirteen signings from across the continent.

Premier League ready players are what the Hammers need over the summer, the likes of Callum Wilson for Bournemouth, despite prone to injury, is linked every time a transfer window comes around and whilst due to his second long term layoff in two season he may not be the one, players in that vein are needed.

Should Bilic apply the finishing touches in the right areas over the coming months, there is no reason the Hammers can be back where they all want to be next term.
