West Ham co-chairman lifts lid on the club’s key transfer plans

It’s been a relatively quiet summer so far for West Ham but the official opening of the transfer window tomorrow could spark the Hammers into life, with Slaven Bilic’s side on the hunt for new players who could make a big difference at the London Stadium.

West Ham struggled to find consistency last season and were lacking in key areas of their side, which ultimately led to a disappointing campaign where the Hammers fell well behind in the race for European football and instead battled off the threat of relegation.

Fans expect significant improvements to be made this summer and securing top-class strikers is the priority for West Ham after their inability to find a reliable attacking outlet last season, which has left the Hammers searching for more than one name.

Speaking to TalkSport, Gold revealed West Ham are on the hunt for two proven Premier League strikers and also played down links to Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, stating the Hammers already have enough options in midfield.

“We are interested in all good players but we have to face the facts here – we have got good midfielders.”

“We have got a good defence, we have got good midfielders, we have got good wingers. We need strikers and that is the key to everything for this season so we are focused first and foremost on bringing in two strikers.”

“It’s clear to most fans that we are desperate for centre-forwards. Andy Carroll is injury-prone as we know, we have had an injury problem with [Diafra] Sakho and we have just got to bring in centre-forwards. We have got to find the money.”

“Without strikers, you struggle in the Premier League. You struggle in any division because strikers are your key players.  You have to spend your money wisely but it must be on strikers, particularly strikers that have had experience with Premier League football – the very best we can afford.”

“We have tried the route of going overseas to bring in players – that hasn’t worked. We had a very difficult season because players we brought in from Europe didn’t make the grade and we paid the price. We struggled.”

West Ham’s strategy to focus on established Premier League players is a good idea but may prove to be costly, especially as the calibre of players the Hammers can bring to the London Stadium is a fine small market.

The Hammers will likely be feeding off scraps from the Premier League’s big guns, with the likes of Olivier Giroud and Daniel Sturridge mentioned, or providing opportunities to young players hungry for a chance, like Michy Batshuayi and Kelechi Iheanacho.

However, each of those four names could potentially arrive at West Ham with problems as Giroud needs to have a side built around him, Sturridge has injury issues, Batshuayi struggled to make an impact in his debut Premier League season and Iheanacho has a lot still to prove.
