West Ham Named As One Of 2 Premier League Clubs Pursuing 19 Cap International Defender

West Ham and Wolves are both considering bids for Stuttgart defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, according to The Sun.

Our sister site GoonerNews exclusively revealed yesterday that the centre-back was attracting interest from Napoli, as well as “a number of Premier League clubs”, and it seems the Hammers are among those looking to sign the player.

Mavropanos has played in England before, having spent four years at Arsenal before leaving for Germany on a permanent basis last year.

However, it appears the Greek international, who has been capped 19 times by his country, could now return to the Premier League if the Hammers manage to see off competition for his signature.

West Ham are in the market for a centre-half

After selling Craig Dawson to Wolves during the January transfer window, manager David Moyes opted against replacing the veteran defender.

The Irons currently have just three recognised centre-backs in Kurt Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna and Nayef Aguerd, with Thilo Kehrer filling in as and when needed. Strengthening the middle of the defence is, therefore, a priority before the transfer window closes.

Mavropanos is not the only player being targeted

It is believed that West Ham have considered moves for a number of different centre-halves. Manchester United’s Harry Maguire was apparently the no.1 target, but two bids have been rejected for the England international in recent weeks (one a loan and another worth £20m).

Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah has also been heavily linked but, while the defender is said to be interested in leaving Stamford Bridge, his reported £45m asking price could prove to be very problematic.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah is on the club’s radar too but, even though the German has expressed an interest in moving to the Premier League, there is some reluctance about paying €20m (£17m) for the defender. Mavropanos, in contrast, is likely to cost much less than these three alternatives.
