West Ham will sign Stuttgart defender Konstantinos Mavropanos in the “next 24 hours”, according to Sky Sports.

The website claim that the former Arsenal player will sign a five-year contract, with the Hammers paying an initial £17m upfront, with another £2m in performance-related add-ons.

Mavropanos was targeted after a move for Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire collapsed last week. David Moyes’ side had agreed a £30m fee for the England international but the player was reluctant to make the switch to the London Stadium.

In contrast, Mavropanos was said to be very keen to join West Ham, having reportedly rejected proposals from Italy in order to make his return to the Premier League.

Medical controversy

It has been a rollercoaster couple of days, with there being conflicting reports about Mavropanos’s medical. It was originally claimed that the transfer was in danger of falling through amid concerns about his injury record.

However, it has subsequently emerged that the Greek international has passed his medical checks, with the move now set to be finalised.

Mavropanos will be West Ham’s third summer signing

The Irons took their time in terms of getting their transfer plans into gear, but things have begun to ramp up in recent weeks, with the club being very active in the market.

After recruiting two midfielders in Ajax’s Edson Alvarez and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse, it looks like Mavropanos will be the third player in through the door.

West Ham are also believed to be pursuing a striker, which is an area of the pitch that does need strengthening following the departure of Gianluca Scamacca to Atalanta.

However, it remains to be seen who their number one target will be. Sporting director Tim Steidten has held talks to sign Mohammed Kudus, but the likes of Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri and Paris Saint-Germain’s Hugo Ekitike have also been mentioned as possible options.
