West Ham Plotting £40M Swoop For Belgian Colossus But They May Have To See Off Chelsea To Get Him

West Ham are looking to reignite their interest in Amadou Onana, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Writing on his Patreon, The Sun reporter claims that Hammers boss David Moyes wants to sign the 6ft 4 midfielder just a year after losing out to Everton for the Belgian’s signature.

A bid between £40m to £50m is expected to be enough to secure Onana’s signature, with Everton needing to raise funds in order to balance the books.

The Toffees paid Lille £33m, including add-ons, to win the race for the player last August but, despite the 21-year-old reportedly rejecting the Irons at the time, it seems Moyes is hopeful of being more persuasive at the second time of asking.

Chelsea could also enter the battle to sign Onana

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported a couple of weeks ago that the Blues have a “strong interest” in the Belgian international so West Ham may have some competition for his services.

However, it should be noted that Mauricio Pochettino’s side are prioritising a move for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo so, if the Hammers make an approach earlier enough for Onana, they could sign him unopposed.

Are West Ham targeting any other midfielders?

Onana is just one option that David Moyes’s side are considering as they look to strengthen their midfield, in anticipation of the departure of captain Declan Rice.

Valencia’s Yunus Musah, Juventus’s Denis Zakaria, Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, Fulham’s Joao Palhinha, Ajax’s Edson Alvarez and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse have all been mentioned as potential targets over the past month.

Out of all of those options, Onana would probably cost more than the majority of those, although his profile, age and potential may make him a more worthwhile purchase in the long run. We shall see which target West Ham decide to pursue over the coming days.
