TOP FIVE Premier League Clubs With The Most Social Media Followers In The World

United fans

Fans often debate about which team is the ‘biggest club’ in the country or the world.

A lot of the arguments get bogged down in discussing the number of trophies and how many seats they can fill at stadiums.

However, a more scientific way of deciding is by looking at the respective social media numbers for each team.

Press the next page as we list the top five Premier League clubs with the most followers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok (based on data from CIES Football Observatory – end of June 2023).

5) Arsenal – 93.7m

The Gunners are, surprisingly a distant fifth on this list, although they are still above North London rivals Tottenham, who have 83.6m followers in comparison.

Arsenal have almost double the number of fans on Facebook (41.1m) compared to Instagram (25.7m) and Twitter (22m), while their TikTok (4.9m) is extremely weak compared to the rest of the Premier League teams in our top five.

Whether Mikel Arteta’s side’s title challenge last season will begin to attract more supporters in the coming months and years, we shall have to wait and see.

If they become regular contenders for trophies once again, you can see the London club increasing these numbers significantly in the near future.

=3) Liverpool – 131m

While the Reds are known to have fans right across the world, their social media hasn’t always been as strong as their Premier League rivals.

They have begun to catch up in recent years, especially following the appointment of Jurgen Klopp in 2015, and their success on the pitch has certainly helped.

Even so, their Facebook numbers (44.7m) are only marginally above Arsenal’s, but they have far more Instagram (41.8m) and TikTok (14.6m) followers.

In terms of Twitter (29.5m), they actually have the second-highest of any English team on our list.

=3) Manchester City – 131m

The Premier League champions and Liverpool are pretty much neck and neck when it comes to social media, having fairly similar numbers on all four major platforms.

At the moment, City have fewer Twitter (25.5m) and Facebook (40.9m) followers than the Reds but they are eking out a lead on other social media sites.

The treble winners are particularly popular on TikTok (18.7m) and they are only narrowly behind Manchester United on that platform.

On Instagram (40.9m), they are actually ahead of Chelsea, but they haven’t been able to match Liverpool’s total quite yet.

2) Chelsea – 134m

The Blues have a marginal lead over both Manchester City and Liverpool in the social media stakes, with a particularly strong following on Facebook (53.6m).

Their numbers for Twitter (27.7m), Instagram (39.4m) and TikTok (13.7m) are pretty much in line with the two clubs below them on this list.

With Mauricio Pochettino taking charge, we shall see if his appointment can bring success to the London club, and whether it leads to a noticeable boost in followers.

It must be said, though, every other team in our top five, including Chelsea, are miles behind the club who are in first place.

1) Manchester United – 206m

The Red Devils have 112m more followers than Arsenal, 75m more than Liverpool and City, and 72m more than Chelsea.

It really is a resounding endorsement of the belief that United are the biggest English club in the world (in terms of all teams, Real Madrid [363m] and Barcelona [342m] are on a different level to everyone else).

If we break down the numbers, the Manchester club have huge followings on Facebook (80.8m) and Instagram (61.5m).

Their total followers on Twitter (41.5m) and TikTok (22.4m) are pretty formidable as well, so they are unlikely to be knocked off the number one spot any time soon.
