Top 20 Worst Premier League Transfers In January PART FOUR

After looking at numbers 12 to 9 in our list of the worst Premier League transfers to take place in January last week, we are now firmly on the home straight.

We will be profiling four deals today that were undoubtedly disasters for their respective teams, with none of them making any real impact on the English top-flight.

Sometimes a transfer may look a good piece of business initially but it can quickly transpire that a massive mistake has been made.

Press the next page as we continue to count down our worst January signings of the Premier League era (numbers 8 to 5).

8) Jean-Alain Boumsong (Rangers to Newcastle – £8m – 2005)

The Frenchman looked like a decent performer playing in the Scottish league but the transfer fee was huge, considering that Rangers had signed him for free just six months before he moved to St James’ Park.

Boumsong’s first six months at Newcastle were pretty solid, as he struck up a good partnership with Titus Bramble, but he struggled in his first full season and he was sold for only £3.3m just a year and a half after joining the Magpies.

7) Juan Cuadrado (Fiorentina to Chelsea – £23.3m – 2015)

The fact that the Colombian winger made just four starts in two seasons at Stamford Bridge kind of tells you all you need to know about his performances for the Blues.

Cuadrado never got up to the pace of the Premier League and he was shipped out on loan back to Italy. He eventually joined Juventus on a permanent basis and he has carved out a niche for himself as a fullback.

6) Kostas Mitroglou (Olympiakos to Fulham – £12.4m – 2014)

This is probably one of the strangest transfers of all time. The Greek international was signed for a substantial fee by the Cottagers but played just three games.

Mitroglou’s fitness was questioned by head coach Felix Magath and he was sent on two loan spells before he was sold for a significant loss to Benfica.

5) Savio Nsereko (Brescia to West Ham – £10m – 2009)

This transfer is shrouded in controversy. The Hammers gave the German their number 10 shirt and paid nearly £10m to bring him to London from Brescia.

However, Savio only played 11 matches for West Ham before being offloaded to Fiorentina. An investigation was even carried out to determine what had happened. It looks as though manager Gianfranco Zola may have simply been let down by scouts who persuaded him to sign a dud.
