The Worst Performing Player At EVERY Premier League Club PART ONE

Today, we are starting a series of posts looking at the worst performing player at each of the 20 clubs currently playing in the Premier League.

To make this as fair as we possibly can, we have opted to use Whoscored‘s rating system to decide which players are objectively the worst performing.

It’s unlikely any of the players on our five-man list today will surprise you but it does offer an interesting look at how some players have performed this season.

Press the next page as we list the worst performing players at Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton and Burnley.

Nuno Tavares – Arsenal (6.41)

Anyone who has watched the Gunners this season will know of the travails of the Portuguese defender. The left-back actually started the campaign pretty well but his performances in recent months have been poor.

So poor in fact that manager Mikel Arteta actually took him off before half-time in the FA Cup defeat to Championship side Nottingham Forest. However, he could be called upon pretty often between now and the end of the season with Kieran Tierney out injured.

Ezri Konsa – Aston Villa (6.40)

The 24-year-old was actually linked with Liverpool last year, which shows you how impressive his performances had been during the 2020/21 season for Villa, but he has come crashing down to earth this campaign.

Konsa is not the only one to blame for the Villans conceding 46 times in 31 matches in the league, but his drop-off in form has been pretty severe nonetheless.

Mads Roerslev – Brentford (6.26)

The Bees have been performing well above expectations during their first season in the Premier League but they have struggled to find a regular right-back/wingback. Roerslev has played a fair few games there but he hasn’t really made it his own.

Manager Thomas Frank has actually opted to play centre-half Kristoffer Ajer in the position when he has decided to go with four at the back. It will be an area that Brentford will consider strengthening this summer.

Danny Welbeck – Brighton (6.44)

The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward has only started nine league games this season, scoring three goals, so he hasn’t actually done that badly. It’s a testament to how well the Seagulls have performed as a group that the striker is the worst performing player in the whole squad.

Welbeck is out of contract at the end of the campaign but reports suggest that the 31-year-old will be offered a new deal.

Matej Vydra – Burnley (6.23)

The Czech has made just three starts (and sixteen substitute appearances) but he hasn’t set the world alight with his performances when given the opportunity. One goal and two assists is all he has to show for his season so far.

Wout Weghorst, Max Cornet, Ashley Barnes and Jay Rodriguez are all competing for places in Burnley’s frontline so Vydra isn’t exactly making a case for himself to start ahead of any of them.
