The Top Five Worst Left Backs Of The Premier League Era

Following our lists of the top five worst goalkeepers and right-backs in Premier League history, we now move on to the left-back position.

We have looked for signings from right across the three decades since the league began to find suitable candidates for this list.

Most of these players had very brief stints in England but they were still memorable in the sense that their performances were so poor.

Press the next page as we go through the five worst left-backs of the Premier League era.

5) Razvan Rat

The Romanian may have had a distinguished career at Shakhtar Donetsk before his arrival at West Ham on a free transfer in 2013, but it was clear he was already past his best when he played for the Hammers during the 2013/14 season.

Rat was allowed to leave the club by mutual consent just eight months after arriving at the London club, not even completing one single campaign.

4) Aly Cissokho

The Frenchman actually spent time at two clubs in England with Liverpool and Aston Villa but he did not impress in either spell. He played 15 games in the Reds’ title challenge during the 2013/14 season but youngster Jon Flanagan was often selected ahead of him.

At Villa, he lasted a year before being loaned out to Porto. He returned to play in the second half of the 2015/16 campaign when the Villans were relegated from the top flight.

3) Gilberto

The left-back had impressed for Brazil at the 2006 World Cup and at the 2007 Copa America. However, it was clear very early on, after he made the switch from Hertha Berlin in January 2008, that he wasn’t cut out for the Premier League.

Gilberto played just seven league games in total for the club, and during the 2008/09 season, he was substituted at half time twice by manager Harry Redknapp, making just three appearances in his first full campaign before being offloaded to Cruzeiro.

2) Najwan Ghrayib

Signed by Aston Villa for £1m from Israeli side Hapoel Haifa in 1999, the defender was hailed as the best left-back that club scout Ross MacLaren had ever seen.

Well, that statement didn’t take long to be proven wrong as after only five league appearances over two seasons, he was shipped back to Israel for just £150,000.

1) Wayne Quinn

The defender had made a name for himself at Sheffield United, making over 100 appearances for the Blades over six seasons, but after moving to Newcastle in 2001, things began to take a turn for the worse.

At the Magpies, he made just a handful of appearances over a three-year spell, being loaned back to Sheffield United before an ill-fated season with West Ham, where he is widely regarded as one of the worst players in the club’s history. He retired at the age of 28.
