The TOP FIVE Highest Paid Defensive Midfielders In The Premier League

Following on from our post on the best paid left-backs in English football last week, we will now focus on defensive midfielders.

A few decades ago, the holding midfield position did not really exist, but the popularisation of the 4-3-3 system led to the role becoming pretty common throughout Europe.

As you will see on our list today, defensive midfielders can earn just as much as strikers due to their importance to the team.

Press the next page as we name the highest earning holding midfield players in the Premier League (based on data from Capology.com).

5) Fabinho – Liverpool – £180K A Week

Along with Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk, the Brazilian has proven to be a pivotal signing for manager Jurgen Klopp, helping the Reds to win every major trophy in recent years.

Fabinho’s telescopic legs mean he is excellent at tacking and, while he isn’t the most mobile player on the pitch, he more than makes up for it with his positioning and anticipation.

4) Thomas Partey – Arsenal – £200K A Week

The Gunners had to trigger the Ghanaian’s release clause to bring him in from Atletico Madrid two years ago, and there is still a debate over whether he was worth the outlay.

When he is fit and available, Partey is a key player in Arsenal’s team, but his injury record since arriving at the Emirates has been pretty poor.

3) Rodri – Manchester City – £220K A Week

The Spaniard did take some time to adapt to the pace of the Premier League but he is undoubtedly one of the best holding midfielders in world football.

Rodri has the height and strength to play as a centre-back but he is technically excellent, and he is well capable of scoring from long range.

2) N’Golo Kante – Chelsea – £289K A Week

The France international has been a force of nature since he first arrived in England, and many of his managers have described him as being worth two players on the pitch due to his energy and work rate.

Kante’s time at Chelsea could, though, soon be coming to an end. His contract expires next summer and there is currently no indication that he will extend his stay at Stamford Bridge.

1) Casemiro – Manchester United – £300k A Week

The Brazilian’s list of club honours is eye-catching. He has five Champions Leagues, three Spanish titles, three Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, three Spanish Super Cups and one Copa del Rey to his name.

Whether Casemiro will have the same level of success at United, it seems unlikely, but he will definitely improve their options in midfield.
