The TOP FIVE Highest Paid Central Midfielders In The Premier League

After going through the best paid holding midfielders last week, this post will be looking at central midfield players.

This list doesn’t include certain names, such as Kevin De Bruyne, mainly due to the fact that they can be better described as attacking midfielders, which will be the subject of another article next week.

Central midfielders can be playmakers, but they can also be destroyers, depending on what system they are deployed in. Surprisingly, there isn’t a player who fits this category who earns above £200,000 a week.

Press the next page as we count down the highest earning central midfield players in the Premier League (based on data from Capology.com).

=4) Ruben Loftus-Cheek – Chelsea – £120K A Week

Despite being a bit-player for the Blues over the years, Loftus-Cheek actually earns more than teammates Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho, despite the pair being regular starters.

New manager Graham Potter has, though, handed more opportunities to Loftus-Cheek since he was appointed so we shall see how the 26-year-old fares in the coming months.

=4) Fred – Manchester United – £120K A Week

The Brazilian has had an up-and-down career at Old Trafford, to say the least. Widely regarded as a flop in his first eighteen months at the club, he then began to establish himself under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Recently, however, since Erik ten Hag’s arrival at United, Fred has seemingly fallen down the pecking order, having only started two league matches so far this campaign.

=2) Jordan Henderson = Liverpool – £140K A Week

The Reds captain signed a new deal last summer to keep him at Anfield until 2025. If he stays for the length of his contract, he would have spent fourteen years on Merseyside.

Since being appointed captain in 2015, Henderson has won eight major trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.

=2) Ilkay Gundogan – Manchester City – £140K A Week

The German international joined City the same summer that Pep Guardiola arrived at the Etihad, and they have had unprecedented success in that time, lifting eleven trophies.

However, Gundogan’s contract with the Premier League champions expires at the end of the season and he could be set to leave after seven years in England.

1) Thiago Alcantara – Liverpool – £200K A Week

The Reds pushed the boat out to recruit the Spanish pass-master from Bayern Munich in 2020, but it’s fair to say that the midfielder hasn’t been a total success.

Injuries have meant that Thiago has missed 50 matches over the past two years, which is approximately a third of the Reds’ total games during that period.
