The Top Five Goalkeepers In The Premier League So Far This Season (Based On Save %)

After assessing the top defenders and forwards over the past couple of weeks, we now turn our attention to the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season.

Unlike other positions on the pitch, there are certain statistics that can help guide us as to who has had the best campaign in goal for their respective clubs.

Shots to saves ratio isn’t the be-all and end-all when deciding which keeper is better but it definitely provides an insight into who is performing the best.

Press the next page as we look at the top goalkeepers in the Premier League so far this campaign, based on their save percentage (stats via FBref).

5) Hugo Lloris (Tottenham) – 77.6%

Despite now being 34 years of age, the Spurs captain is looking better than ever. He continues to be one of the best keepers in the Premier League after spending almost nine years in England.

Lloris’s current deal at Tottenham does expire at the end of next season, though, so it remains to be seen how long he will stay at the London club.

4) Nick Pope (Burnley) – 77.8%

The England international is a consistently excellent shot-stopper and his save percentage is all the more impressive considering the number of shots he has to face as Burnley’s number one.

Whether Pope will leave Turf Moor in the future for a bigger club, we shall have to wait and see. He has all the attributes to be a number one at a top-six club.

3) Alphonse Areola (Fulham) – 77.9%

Cottagers boss Scott Parker knew he had to shake up the defence after conceding ten goals in their first three games back in the top flight, and the introduction of the French keeper certainly contributed to improved performances at the back as the season went on.

Areola spent most of last campaign sitting on Real Madrid’s bench but Fulham were smart to take him on loan when PSG made it known they were willing to offload the keeper on a temporary basis once more.

2) Ederson (Manchester City) – 78.2%

The Brazilian has 15 clean sheets this season and he is well on the way to securing the Golden Glove award for the second consecutive campaign.

Many credit summer signing Ruben Dias for City’s improved defence this season but Ederson has also played a big part in keeping the opposition out.

1) Emi Martinez (Aston Villa) – 79%

The £20m that Villa paid for the Argentine shot-stopper is looking like money well spent. The 28-year-old was also excellent when playing for Arsenal after Project Restart and he is continued in the same rich vein of form this season.

Martinez was tipped for a shock England call-up last month, as he is eligible after spending nine years in the UK, but he will likely be selected by Argentina in the not too distant future.
