We are now eight matches into the Premier League season and things are beginning to take shape in terms of who the favourites are for the league title, as well as for relegation.

Throughout the course of the campaign, website WhoScored.com record data from every player playing in the top flight, gauging their performances on different metrics, including passing, dribbling, heading etc.

An overall rating is assigned to each player and this list comprises of the current top five. The ratings are based on a minimum number of five league games.

Press the next page as we go through the five best performing players in the Premier League this campaign.

5) Ivan Toney (Brentford) – 7.54

The 25-year-old has been a menace for opposition defences so far this season, having even got the better of Virgil van Dijk in Brentford’s 3-3 draw last month.

Toney’s two goals and two assists in eight appearances is certainly not a bad return either, considering his lack of experience of top-flight football.

4) Trevoh Chalobah (Chelsea) – 7.62

The defender has been one of the big surprises at the start of this campaign. Blues boss Thomas Tuchel was impressed enough with him in pre-season to put him in for the UEFA Super Cup final.

Chalobah has subsequently impressed when called up to play in league matches and he is becoming an established member of the first-team squad.

3) Michail Antonio (West Ham) – 7.66

Hammers fans don’t need to be told how well the 31-year-old is performing at the moment. His five goals and three assists in seven league appearances only tells half the story.

Antonio’s ability to hold up the ball, combined with his work rate, make him a perfect frontman for manager David Moyes. The Jamaican is key to West Ham’s success this season.

2) Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool) – 7.74

People often complain about his poor defensive qualities, but his contributions in the final third of the pitch more than outweigh any deficiencies the right-back has in his game.

Alexander-Arnold is Liverpool’s best creative outlet, having made two assists in six Premier League appearances so far this campaign.

1) Mo Salah (Liverpool) – 8.21

It will come as a shock to no one that the Egyptian international is statistically the best performing player in the Premier League currently.

Salah has gone up to a different level this season, scoring seven goals and contributing four assists in eight matches for Liverpool.
