The Position West Ham Need To Improve In The Summer

Despite their late fightback in recent weeks that could preserve their Premier League status, the current season has not been a particularly positive one for West Ham United.

There have been issues all over the pitch, but they have suffered the most in one position – right-back. The right flank has been a consistent weakness for the Hammers throughout the year – many teams have been happy to exploit it.

Both Ben Johnson and Vladimir Coufal have not been up to par in the current campaign. Defensively, the pair have been poor – they have also struggled to make an impact in the final third, as they just have one assist in the league between them (and no goals to speak of).

Coufal isn’t getting any younger, aged 30, and Johnson is unlikely to develop into a top-class full-back anytime soon. As such, it is probably time for the Hammers to invest in this position.

Kyle Walker-Peters could be a solid addition. Should Southampton get relegated, he is unlikely to want to remain at the club – he wouldn’t come cheap, however, as the England international still has two years left on his current contract.

As well as this, Brighton’s Joel Veltman is out of contract in the summer and could be snapped up on a free transfer. At 31, he is no spring chicken, but has had an excellent season with the Seagulls – could he replicate that success with the Irons next year?
