The FOUR Premier League Stars Named In FIFA’s 14 Best Players In The World

Messi

Lionel Messi was unsurprisingly handed the FIFA Best Men’s Player award at a ceremony earlier this week.

The Argentine was a talismanic figure for his country as they won the World Cup and it clearly played a massive role in him coming out on top for the prize.

The award is decided by a combination of coaches, players, journalists and fans so there has been a lot of debate about the makeup of the list.

Four Premier League stars ended up in the top 14 so press the next page to find who they are.

Mo Salah (Liverpool) – 14th

Egypt didn’t qualify for the World Cup so that is part of the reason the 30-year-old was ranked so low.

However, Salah’s form has also dipped significantly this season. After scoring 31 goals in all competitions last campaign, he has only managed to bag 19 since August, with only eight in the Premier League.

If you compare his scoring numbers to the likes of Erling Haaland and Harry Kane, he has fallen well behind his rivals in terms of proficiency in front of goal.

Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) – 10th

The Belgian playmaker was integral to the Citizens lifting their fourth Premier League title in five years back in May.

It’s fair to say, though, that De Bruyne’s form has been less impressive during the 2022/23 season. While he continues to provide assists, left, right and centre, he has only found the back of the net himself five times this campaign.

The midfielder’s performances at the World Cup were also below par, and that contributed to Belgium’s early exit from the tournament.

Julian Alvarez (Manchester City) – 7th

The 23-year-old’s placement on the list has actually been questioned by Chelsea’s Thiago Silva, who labelled the voting process for the FIFA Awards as a “joke” on Instagram.

Alvarez has, though, been a breakout star at both club and international level over the past twelve to eighteen months.

The Argentine international’s performances at the World Cup were a key reason why his country won the tournament, and he has scored his fair share of goals since moving from River Plate to City last summer.

Erling Haaland (Manchester City) – 5th

The Norwegian’s form this season has been phenomenal and he is on the course to break the Premier League’s goalscoring record.

There have been a few bizarre claims from pundits that his game doesn’t fit with Manchester City’s style of play, but his 33 goals in 33 goals tells us otherwise.

Norway’s absence from the World Cup probably hindered his chances of being placed any higher on FIFA’s list.
