The FIVE WORST Home Defeats Suffered In Premier League History

Being humiliated on your own patch is the worst nightmare for any supporter and, due to the competitive nature of the Premier League, it is not something that happens all that often.

However, there have been freak games over the years where the home side has been completely embarrassed.

Our list today actually comprises of one team who has been on a receiving end of a hiding, but also has inflicted a heavy defeat on an opponent away from home.

Press the next page as we count down the five worst home defeats of the Premier League era.

=4) Sheffield Wednesday 1-7 Nottingham Forest (1995)

The Owls did not cover themselves in glory when they faced a team who were not exactly superior to them.

Forest went 3-0 up before Wednesday striker Mark Bright pulled one back from the penalty spot, sparking hopes of a comeback.

However, a goal from Bryan Roy, as well as three more in the final 30 minutes, inflicted a devastating home defeat on Trevor Francis’s team

=4) Hull City 1-7 Tottenham (2017)

Hull were leaking goals left, right and centre during the 2016/17 season. They let in 80 by the end of the campaign and they were unsurprisingly relegated from the top flight.

The nadir was their home defeat to Spurs. The Tigers were 3-0 down at halftime before Sam Clucas pulled one back from the spot.

Victor Wanyama restored the three-goal margin almost instantly, though, before Harry Kane, Ben Davies and Toby Alderweireld completed the rout.

3) Crystal Palace 0-7 Liverpool (2020)*

We’ve put an asterisk by this one as this game was held behind closed doors due to the restrictions of the pandemic.

Palace still took one hell of a beating, though, with Roy Hodgson’s men 4-0 down even before Mo Salah was unleashed off the bench.

The Egyptian international came on midway through the second half, setting up Roberto Firmino’s second goal and scoring a brace of his own.

2) Nottingham Forest 1-8 Manchester United (1999)

Nearly four years after carving apart Sheffield Wednesday, Forest were on the receiving end when United came to the City Ground.

Alex Ferguson’s side were on fire as they chased the treble but the game was all about the performance of one man.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came on as a substitute to score four goals in just thirteen minutes, as he put Forest to the sword with some lethal finishing.

1) Southampton 0-9 Leicester City

This is the joint-highest defeat of the Premier League era but manager Ralph Hasenhuttl somehow managed to keep his job, despite the debacle.

Leicester’s Ben Chilwell opened the scoring before Ryan Bertrand’s sending-off after 12 minutes. That was the trigger for the Saints to fold like a pack of cards.

The Foxes were 5-0 up at halftime before the pace slowed down slightly after the interval.
