After 8 Games Played, Supercomputer Predicts Where Every Club Will Finish In The 2023/24 Premier League Table

Pep Guardiola

We are now eight games into the Premier League season, and the stat boffins at Opta have given an updated prediction about the final Premier League table.

Their supercomputer is said to run 1000s of simulations to determine the result of every match between now and the end of campaign in order to decide the final position for all 20 clubs.

We are nearly a quarter of the way through the season, so things are beginning to take shape and supporters will likely be interested to find out where their team are predicted to finish.

Press the next page as we look at Opta’s predicted Premier League table for the 2023/24 campaign (as of 11th October 2023).

The 3 relegated teams

20th: Sheffield United
19th: Luton Town
18th: Bournemouth

It not surprising to see Sheffield United rooted to the bottom of the table. Paul Heckingbottom’s side have yet to win a game, having conceded 22 goals in their first eight matches.

Luton have not fared much better, but they have at least secured their first victory after beating Everton.

Things are not looking too promising for Bournemouth and manager Andoni Iraola, though. The gamble to sack Gary O’Neil and appoint the Spaniard doesn’t seem to be paying off and the Cherries may have to make another managerial change before May to avoid relegation.

Narrowly missing out on the drop

17th: Burnley
16th: Everton
15th: Nottingham Forest
14th: Wolverhampton Wanderers

These four clubs have managed 6 wins between them so far this season so you would expect them to continue to struggle.

Wolves have certainly looked the most impressive of the bunch in recent games, having beaten champions Manchester City.

Opta are tipping Burnley as the only newly-promoted club to beat the drop which seems like a fair prediction. After losing 4-1 at home to Chelsea last time out, though, they will need to tighten up at the back.

Mid-table mediocrity

13th: Fulham
12th: Brentford
11th: Crystal Palace
10th: Chelsea

Despite their recent improvement, having won their last two league matches, Opta still believe Chelsea won’t get above midtable. That won’t please the owners who have spent over £1bn on their squad.

Crystal Palace, Brentford and Fulham have all had pretty average starts to the season so you can see that trend continuing for the remaining 30 fixtures.

Brentford will, however, be slightly concerned with their form, having not won since August, but they were unlucky to lose to Manchester United last weekend.

Top 10 competitors

9th: Manchester United
8th: West Ham United
7th: Brighton & Hove Albion
6th: Aston Villa

If United finish where Opta predicts they will, manager Erik ten Hag may find himself out of a job next summer.

The Dutchman is hoping the last-gasp win versus Brentford will help turn around the Red Devils’ season but, after losing 4 of their first 8 fixtures, 9th position could be the best they can hope for.

Villa, Brighton and West Ham have all started the season pretty strongly and it looks as though they will be fighting it out for positions in the Europa League and Europa Conference League.

Champions League qualification

5th: Newcastle United
4th: Tottenham Hotspur
3rd: Liverpool
2nd: Arsenal
1st: Manchester City

After losing 3 straight games before the September international break, Newcastle have turned their form around in recent weeks, and that has been reflected in their predicted final league position.

Despite 2 consecutive defeats, though, Manchester City are still being backed to win their sixth league title under the management of Pep Guardiola, with Arsenal and Liverpool trailing behind them.

Spurs may be top of the table currently but the Supercomputer is expecting Ange Postecoglou’s side to slip back somewhat, albeit still sealing a Champions League spot.
