Southampton vs West Ham Match Preview and Predictions

West Ham travel to Southampton this weekend in search of their first points of the new season. The Hammers opened their campaign with a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Manchester United, a result that was entirely unexpected given their success in this summer’s transfer market. Southampton on the other hand started their season with a 0-0 draw to Swansea City, despite having 29 shots on goal.

The Hammers will be in desperate need of points, as the last time they lost both of their opening two games to a league season they suffered relegation from the Premier League. Southampton have won two of their last three Premier League games against West Ham, but have failed to score in their last six home Premier League games, a promising stat for Hammers fans.

West Ham have had a busy summer transfer window so far, and reports of William Carvalho joining could set them up to have a well-rounded side who, similar to Southampton, can contend for a top half finish and challenge for European football.

Results and performances need to come quickly though, and Southampton will provide Slavan Bilic’s men with a real tough encounter – as both sides could be compared fairly evenly ability wise.

Virgil van Dijk will miss the fixture due to an ongoing “illness”, amid reports of him leaving the club this summer. However, supporters will hope to get a first glimpse of new signing Mario Lemina, the club-record £18m Juventus man.

West Ham will be without Manuel Lanzini and Cheick Kouyate who will both miss the trip due to respective knee issues. Striker Andy Carroll will also sit out of the fixture to due to a groin strain.
