West Ham left-back Arthur Masuaku has signed a new five-year contract with the club.
The 25-year-old had just one year remaining on his deal at the London Stadium, but he has now been tied down until 2024, with the club having the option to extend for a further two years.
A lot of supporters were happy that Masuaku was offered a new contract:
King Arthur ?????? so happy about this, he’s so underrated

Arthur was looking much better defensively at the back end of last season ..
especially the spurs game .
Going forward he’s class— Paolo (@ellingford_paul) 29 July 2019
He screams an MP full back. Pace, great on the ball, skilful, can’t defend ?? seriously though, if they can get him focussed on his defending and learning that art, he has the quality to be one of the best attacking LBs in the league. King Arthur!

I think on his day he’s an unbelievable full back glides across the pitch going forward just needs to cut out the stupid errors and he’s a very well rounded LB

I’m a fan of Masuaku. Young, quick, with immense talent on the ball. … Just needs to iron out some errors and lapses in concentration to be a top left back.

Got his best years to come

However, there were some who questioned the wisdom of giving the Frenchman a lengthy extension considering he hasn’t always been a consistent performer:
in Pellegrini we trust, but Arthur gives me nightmares defensively

At least we’ve protected ourselves against losing a player on a free next summer. Only positive I can take from this news I’m afraid!

Hopefully the coaching staff has been working on the defensive side of his game!

I think it’s a disaster to go in with him as first choice left back mate. First and foremost he is abysmal at his main job (defending) but I trust Pellegrini to hopefully prove me wrong!

Manager Manuel Pellegrini is believed to be a big fan of Masuaku and is said to have been the driving force behind the defender staying at West Ham.
There’s no doubt he is very capable when marauding down the left flank, but his defending can leave a lot to be desired at times.
Hammers fans will be hoping he can improve that area of his game over the coming years.
