Sky Sports Reporter Reveals West Ham ‘Want’ To Sign £4m Defender But There’s A Problem

West Ham are keen on signing New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth. He says the Hammers are very much still in for the American international but must resolve a work permit issue to get the deal done:

“Representatives of New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long are still trying to get the player a work permit. West Ham want to sign him for £4m.”

Long’s availability for £4m this summer has attracted a number of other teams. Marseille, Lyon, Fiorentina and Rennes have also been tracking the centre-back.

The American has been capped 11 times by the USA and has made over 100 appearances for the Red Bulls over the past three years.

If West Ham can’t get the deal for Long over the line, though, the London club are said to be considering other options. Some reports suggest the club may go back in for Alaves’s Guillermo Maripan while there has also been a suggestion that the Irons may look to snap up Gary Cahill.

The former Chelsea captain is available on a free transfer this summer and would allow Pellegrini to strengthen his backline without spending a great deal.
