“Schoolboy Stuff…” Cole Slams West Ham Summer Signing After Witnessing Defensive Error Against FCSB

Ex-West Ham striker Carlton Cole was critical of Emerson Palmieri after the role the Italian international played in FCSB’s goal yesterday evening.

The fullback failed to track the run of Andrea Cordea, who ghosted in at the far post to give the away side a shock lead at the London Stadium. Cole was not happy with the defender’s positioning and lack of awareness:

“This is schoolboy stuff that I’m seeing here. This part here is just, he (Emerson) doesn’t look once over his shoulder. He doesn’t know anything that’s going on.”

Emerson was signed from Chelsea for £15m a week before the transfer window closed, with manager David Moyes keen to give Aaron Cresswell competition for his place on the left-hand side of defence.

His performance (defensively at least) left a lot to be desired last night, although he did make up for it somewhat by getting on the scoresheet as the Hammers came from a goal down to secure a 3-1 victory.

Whether Cresswell will be reinstated to the first team for West Ham’s next game, following that display from Emerson, we shall have to wait and see.
