Rival club dispute West Ham’s claims on summer midfield target

West Ham have endured a dramatic few months, with the club doing very well to land Joe Hart, Marko Arnautovic, Pablo Zabaleta and Javier Hernandez but also missing out on key midfield targets.

The Hammers were very public in their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon ace William Carvalho, whilst co-chairman David Sullivan remarkably revealed yesterday that boss Slaven Bilic turned down the opportunity to sign Grzegorz Krychowiak and Renato Sanchez; who joined West Brom and Swansea City respectively.

Sullivan also claimed the Hammers pulled out of a deal on Deadline Day for Portuguese international Carvalho, as the club could not complete a medical in time ahead of the closing of the window, but that claim has been disputed by Sporting Lisbon.

Issuing a statement, Sporting Lisbon denied any offer had been reached or offered by the Hammers as they said:

“No proposal arrived for the player William Carvalho. Mr Sullivan has a duty to prove what he says. For this reason, Sporting Clube de Portugal challenge him to publicly show the proposals he says have been made, as well as the evidence that Sporting CP has received them.”

A deal for Carvalho would have seen the Hammers shatter their club transfer record for the second time this summer, having already broken their previous record with the capture of Arnautovic from Stoke City, but fans may well feel aggrieved by the situation.
Sullivan’s comments have already been criticised by many, as he’s accused of throwing Croatian boss Slaven Bilic under the bus, and the disputes from Sporting Lisbon will certainly raise further questions.
West Ham have endured a woeful start to the season as they’ve lost all three of their Premier League matches, conceding ten goals in the process and scoring just twice, raising the pressure ahead of the return from the international break.
