A potential West Ham United transfer has been dashed – former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on the final day of the Serie A season.

The Hammers were reportedly lining up a swap deal with Roma – they would have transferred Gianluca Scamacca in exchange for the Camberwell native, had everything gone to plan.

However, with Abraham suffering an injury that could keep him out of action until 2024, the Irons will now need to look elsewhere if they want to bring a new centre-forward to the club for next season.

West Ham will be far from the only club who are disappointed with the news of Abraham’s injury – least of all Roma themselves, who were keen to move the 25-year-old on in the summer.

Manchester United, Aston Villa and Newcastle United had all been linked with a move for Abraham over the last couple of months. It is unclear who was leading the race to acquire his signature – of course, this is now irrelevant.

Tammy Abraham career summary

Abraham joined Chelsea’s academy back in 2004, when he was just seven years of age. After 12 years in the Blues’ youth ranks, he enjoyed his professional debut with the club towards the end of the 2015/16 season.

The following campaign, Abraham was sent out on loan to Championship club Bristol City. He enjoyed plenty of success with the Robins, scoring 23 goals in 41 games.

A loan the following season to Swansea City was less successful – however, he found form when he went out on loan to Aston Villa, scoring 25 goals in 37 games.

He joined Roma in 2021 – in total, he netted 21 goals in 58 games during his time at Chelsea. His time in Italy has been mixed – he has scored an admirable 25 goals in 74 games, but it is far from his best goals tally.
