The 5 Premier League Goalkeepers Who Have Made The Most Saves This Season

We first looked at the Premier League keepers with the most saves back in November and in this post, we will be providing an updated top 5.

It should be pointed out that making the most stops doesn’t necessarily make a goalkeeper a top performer.

In reality, it means they are also facing the most shots, which suggests the defence in front of them isn’t doing a great job.

Press the next page as we name the five top-flight goalkeepers with the highest number of saves (based on data from PremierLeague.com)

5) Andre Onana (Manchester United) – 104 Saves

The Cameroon international has begun to win over his critics in recent months.

After a series of mistakes earlier in the season, many felt that United’s decision to pay £47m for Onana was a mistake.

However, slowly but surely, he has begun to put in more reliable performances, and it is reflected in the numbers.

In addition to the number of saves he has made, Onana has the third-highest save percentage (74.5) in the Premier League this campaign. He is also in contention for the Golden Glove award with 8 clean sheets.

4) Thomas Kaminski (Luton Town) – 105 Saves

The Hatters have been fighting bravely against relegation and they have managed to stay in matches thanks to the heroics of their Belgian keeper.

Kaminski initially found life tough in the English top flight, much like many of his teammates, but he has gradually got to grips with the Premier League.

Luton paid just £2.5m (plus add-ons) to recruit him from Blackburn Rovers in the summer, and it looks like money well spent.

Kaminski will certainly not be in contention for the Golden Glove award but he could still save his team a few vital points in the battle against the drop.

=2) James Trafford (Burnley) – 106 Saves

It has been a baptism of fire for the young keeper who has looked out of his depth during his first season as a No.1 in the top flight.

The Clarets paid a hefty £19m to bring him in from Manchester City at the start of the season and the investment hasn’t paid off yet.

Of course, at 21 years of age, Trafford is still learning his trade and it may be some time before Burnley start to see him repay the fee they shelled out on him.

The England Under 21 international has pulled off his fair share of saves, but his save ratio (65.7%) is not particularly great, which shows you how many shots Burnley have been conceding.

=2) Alphonse Areola (West Ham) – 106 Saves

You do wonder where the Hammers would be in the table without the Frenchman this campaign.

Areola has had to perform heroics in goal on more than one occasion in recent months, with his display during the 3-1 win over Everton standing out.

There was some debate when the 31-year-old took over from Lukasz Fabianski as first-choice in the summer.

However, manager David Moyes has been proven right in handing the gloves to Areola for league fixtures.

1) Wes Foderingham (Sheffield United) – 108 Saves

It is some achievement to be top of this list when you haven’t even played every game for your club but that just shows you how many shots the Blades keeper has faced.

Foderingham has been bombarded, and you do have some sympathy for the 33-year-old, who has recently been dropped by manager Chris Wilder.

Ivo Grbic has taken the No.1 spot but he hasn’t had much much luck either having conceded 11 times in just 4 games.

Sheffield United have been so poor this season that not even the best keeper in the world would save them from relegation.
