Moyes slams Hammers after Brighton defeat

David Moyes has slammed his West Ham team after the weekend’s defeat to Brighton.

The Hammers were humbled 3-1 by the Seasiders at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Glenn Murray opened the scoring early on for the home side, before West Ham striker Javier Hernandez levelled things up on the half-hour mark with a fine solo goal.

Brighton dominated the second half however, and took the lead after an hour through Jose Izquierdo – who found the top corner from the edge of the box with a superb curled strike.

Pascal Gross then made it 3-1 to complete what was a miserable afternoon for the Hammers.

Following the defeat, manager David Moyes was frank in his assessment of his side, saying that the performance “didn’t merit a result”.

“Today wasn’t very good,” Moyes said, “Our performance didn’t merit a result. Brighton were the better team in the end.

“At half-time we had fought our way back into the game but they scored a worldy to make it 2-1, which made it very difficult. I think prior to that we hadn’t done enough anyway.

“I’m disappointed with the defeat. We’ve been on a really good run recently and we’ve picked up points and we’ve stuck at games. But we were never really in the game today. Right from the start, I never felt it. We gave the first one away, we gave the third one away and, actually, I think we should have dealt with the ball from the corner before the second goal.”

Despite the defeat however, the Scotsman aims to pick back up where he left off prior to the weekend having enjoyed a fine start to his managerial career at the London Stadium.

Since taking over, Moyes has helped propel the Hammers from almost the foot of the Premier League table up to 12th position, and he says he aims to keep his side pulling away from the bottom half.

He continued: “I’ve said for a while that any given team on any day could beat each other in the bottom half of the league, but on another day, there will be draws and points taken off of each other. It’s going to be tight.

“We’re all working hard together. We’re in a difficult position and we’ve got to make sure we stay away from the bottom end.”
